Dr. Arthur Pape dealed with the problem of colour vision in aviation like no one else before. He questions the importance of normal colour vision in the aviation enviroment. His thesis do not come from the scientific field only, but from real aviation taks.

Furthermore, Dr. Pape takes a close look on the work of pilots in a cockpit and he states, that “colour coding” is not present in current aviation systems. If “colour coding” would exist here, it would be “bad engineering”, also.

Aviation systems are designed to be redundant, so pilots can get their information by many different system and operate an aircraft as safely as possible:

Dr. Papes major article deals with the colour perception standard. He describes the australian developments, which lead to a new understanding of the actual need for colour vision in aviation

This article was written by Dr. Pape in response to an article by Dr. Barry Clark. Dr. Clark supports the aviation colour perception standard and argues, that colour vision is essentially necessary to pilot an aircraft safely. In this essay Dr. Pape takes a more scientific approach to the problem and introduces a model to describe all possible forms of colour coding, and its effects on the colour vision defective person.
